Olympians fired 11 past Tudor Wests before Waratahs squeezed past Services 2-nil in the wet.
They got the worst of the conditions, with rain pelting down and leaving puddles on the field.
“I was really happy with my girls,” Waratahs coach Graeme McKenzie said.
“They’re good matches to win – tough conditions and against a good team.”
Conditions were pretty horrible.
“It was very difficult to shift the ball around the way we wanted to,” McKenzie said.
Pip Ash put them them ahead 1-nil with a “good determined run along the backline and touch in”.
Katrina Rekunow then extended their advantage in the second half off a penalty corner.
It was good thinking on her behalf, McKenzie said, coming up with a short option on the side and flicking it in.
“The girls were struggling to get the ball out on corners,” he said.
He said their persistence in the attacking circle was good, and felt it was one of the telling factors.
“The other thing I think our girls did was show a good understanding for the conditions,” he said.
“They started to throw a few balls in the air.
“It was difficult to move the ball in the puddles.”
He was also really happy with how the defence scrambled when they were under pressure.
Taylor King was again strong playing in unfamiliar territory at back.
The visiting Mel Courtney also added a fair amount of stiffness at the back of the field.
Brittany King also worked well all game but they all played good hockey, McKenzie said.
Services captain-coach Kimmy McLean said it was hard to say whether it was a good or bad performance.
The conditions made things a bit of a lottery.
“The first half was a little bit better rain-wise,” she said.
They were, though, probably a step behind Waratahs.
“I said to them at half-time it looked like they wanted it more,” McLean said.
“They were first to the ball and a bit more pro-active.”
It was hard to act on that in the second half with conditions worsening.
She said Prue Davies played well for them. Kate Perrett also never stopped trying and Jess McIntosh was strong.
Earlier, captain Dana Constable slotted four, Bernie Arnell three and Naomi Sparke a double as Olympians outgunned Tudors 11-nil.
“It wasn’t too bad. Our first half was a lot better than our second half,” Constable said.
They probably dropped off a bit in the second half.
That said, Tudors did come out strongly in the second half and had them under a bit of pressure.
“We had a patch where we didn’t get out of our half,” she said.
“Then we got a runaway and that got the ball rolling.”
They were able to use the game as a chance to practise what they’ve been working on at training, and did convert their chances pretty well.
“Which was different to previous games,” she added.
Arnell and sister Danielle were awesome again.
Sparke, Em Chaffey and Gabby Hathway also had strong games.
