TAMWORTH is getting a taste of professional basketball this weekend with the Sydney Kings and Cairns Taipans in town competing for the Schweppes-Drury’s Cup.
With one game down, the final decider will be played tonight at the Tamworth Sports Dome and players have been out and about visiting schools, holding clinics and attending business breakfasts.
Sydney Kings head coach Shane Heal was the guest speaker at the Tamworth Business Chamber breakfast yesterday, regaling the crowd with stories from his high-profile career.
Students from Hillvue Public School were among eight schools yesterday to receive a visit from the NBL players, getting some tips and tricks from the basketball experts.
“They really went down a treat. It was a bit of a thrill for the kids,” Hillvue teacher Lyn McDonald said.
The kids looked up to the players, literally with extra-tall Taipans Kevin White and Jarrad Weeks going through some basketball drills with the students.
With a team of open girls off to the state finals next week, Kevin and Jarrad spent some one-on-one time with the youngsters.
They will get to share some court space with the players tonight, playing a demonstration match before the main game kicks off.
Tickets have been in hot demand for both games, with last night’s match a near sell-out and only a handful of seats to fill for tonight’s game.
Today the players will be up and about early at Tamworth Sports Dome with a rep clinic and open shoot beginning at 9am.
