They are clinging to the sixth and final play-off position going into their last three games of the regular season, starting with Friday night's encounter with the Pretoria Bulls at Canberra Stadium.

Wallabies prop Scott Sio will return from a six-week absence with a knee injury. He played 60 minutes in Canberra club rugby on Saturday.

Sio's return couldn't come at a better time as the Brumbies strive to move up the ladder to give themselves a vital home game in the play-offs.

It will be the last chance for several Brumbies stars to taste success before they continue their careers overseas next year.

Scrumhalf Nic White and fullback Jesse Mogg have signed with clubs in France after playing key roles in the Brumbies' resurgence in the past few years, while destructive forward Fotu Auleua is unlikely to receive a new contract.

"You always want to send the boys off on a high note," Sio said.

"There are a few players here [from] that core group in 2012, when we all started our Brumby journey [who won't be here next year]. We owe it to them to give it our best shot possible at winning the Super Rugby title."

The Brumbies have two of their final three games at home and don't face any side higher on the ladder.

The Brumbies can still win the Australian conference. They are three points behind the NSW Waratahs, who face the Lions and Cheetahs in South Africa in the next fortnight before finishing at home to the Queensland Reds.

The Brumbies showed in 2013 when they beat the Bulls in Pretoria in a semi-final that they are capable of winning on the road.

"If you give yourself a chance, that's all you need," Sio said. "We almost achieved that back in 2013 from third place so I don't think it's too dissimilar between third, fourth, fifth and sixth.

"Best-case scenario, first or second, but at the end of the day you just want to be there."

Sio suffered a grade two medial ligament strain in the Brumbies' 16-14 loss to the Auckland Blues on April 10.

He was set to play the first half for the Tuggeranong Vikings in the John I Dent Cup, but felt so good he managed to play 60 minutes in the side's 35-12 win against Uni-Norths.

"My knee was as good as it could be after the injury time period – it becomes more of mental thing," Sio said.

"Physically I felt really good. The whole weekend was about for me to be ready for (Friday night) and to put my hand up for selection."
