The numbers have been crunched – and Oliver and Olivia have emerged as the most popular names for boys and girls in Australia last year.

Both were number three the year before. 

For Barraba mum Erika Bottrell, she and partner Ben Monckton decided on Oliver after watching the US television series, Arrow.

It follows billionaire playboy Oliver Queen, who fights crime and corruption as a secret vigilante.

Perhaps other local mums had had similar inspiration, because Erika said when she went into Tamworth hospital to have her son, there were a number of other Olivers also entering the world.

Oliver James Monckton – James is a family name – turns one later this month and took his first steps earlier this week.

His parents couldn’t be prouder, their son coming ahead in leaps in bounds after making his appearance five weeks’ early and having to spend his first week in special care.

As for the other top monikers, largely traditional names have continued to dominate both the boys’ and girls’ lists, with William, Jack, Noah and Jackson, and Charlotte, Mia, Ava and Amelia rounding out the top five respectively.

With the newest British royal being christened this week, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Charlotte claim the top girls’ spot next year, particularly considering the apparent influence of her big brother, George.

The birth of Prince George Alexander Louis in 2013 seems to have had an impact on Aussie parents, with Alexander in the top 10, George rocketing up 32 places to number 43, and Louis entering the top 100 for the first time.

Other names on the comeback trail include Olive, Eleanor, Harriet and Hazel for girls, with the very traditional Anthony, Adam and David for boys.

Other names in the top 100 include Frankie, Charlie, Aallyah and Ariana, and Phoenix, Ryder, Kai and Braxton.
