In Tamworth Local Court this week Magistrate Michael Holmes slammed the actions of Frank James Allan when he attacked the pair who had been called to a job on Hillvue Rd on January 27.
Allan became aggressive towards the officers when the female patient was placed in an ambulance just before 1am to carry out observations.
Allan immediately demanded paramedics remove the woman, yelling abuse, before threatening to kill them if they didn’t comply.
Paramedics attempted to calm him down but the abuse continued.
The officers told police, who were called for backup, they were forced to lock themselves in the ambulance and called for urgent assistance.
Tamworth police initiated a search to find Allan after he fled the area before he was eventually tracked down and arrested in the weeks following.
He has been in custody since earlier this year after he failed in his bid to be released on bail after the prosecution argued he was a flight risk, had a violent history and could commit further offences.
Following negotiations, Allan pleaded guilty to obstructing an ambulance officer by an act of violence and intimidation before a charge of common assault was withdrawn and dismissed.
Mr Holmes said the behaviour had to be condemned because paramedics had a job to do without fear of any violence.
He told the court the conduct was serious enough to warrant full-time imprisonment.
Allan was jailed for 18 months with a non-parole period of nine months.
After time served, he will be eligible for parole in January, next year.
