Rounds of 73 and 73 handed the young golfer, who is still recovering from a nasty ankle injury, a three-shot advantage over club treasurer Ben Lockwood following last weekend’s first two championship rounds.
The second year apprentice plasterer at Tamworth Plaster Works has done well to be back playing after suffering a terrible ankle injury last year when making a guest appearance for Pirates Rugby Club, let alone be leading A Grade by three shots.
Lockwood carded 75, 74 for a two-round total of 149 while David Hamilton sits a shot back in third after a disastrous first round of 79 was followed by a one-over par 71 last Sunday.
Nigel Robertson (75, 76) and Andrew Cameron (76, 75) are equal fourth on 151 while John Trevaskis is on 152 after rounds of 77, 75 to complete an interesting first weekend.
The final two rounds will be played this Saturday and Sunday in not only A grade but B and C Grades as well.
Jake Philp (161) leads B Grade from Robert Burns (164) by three shots while Scott Flemming (179) heads up C grade from Tony McCann (182).
Tamworth Golf Club captain Ken Munday said the final two days offer interesting finishes in all three grades.
“ The decision by the match committee to hold the championships over two weekends has been well accepted by our members as we had 191 starters on Saturday and 155 on Sunday,” Munday said.
“That is much better than in previous years.
“The course won on the weekend, with the rating on Saturday 73 and Sunday 72. Most players were high in their praise for the condition of the course.”
While the men will complete their club championships on the weekend, the Tamworth Lady Golfers will complete their 2015 club championships today.
They played their first two rounds last week and had a third round on Tuesday with the final round today.
A Grade nett winner at Tamworth last Saturday was Nathan Myhill (70), r/up Dean Taylor (70) on countback. B Grade nett winner Robert Burns (64) r/up Jake Philp 66. C Grade nett winner was Scott Flemming (67) r/up Tony McCann (67) on countback.
Sunday’s second round of the Choices Flooring Club Championship had Ro Shelton win the A Grade nett with 69 from Glen Balderston 70. B Grade nett went to Tim Budd (66), r/up William Constable (67). In C Grade Stephen Wilkinson (70) was the nett winner from Duncan Butler (73).
