Nationals are not free agents in coalition

IN his comments in The NDL on February  9, 1999, Richard Torbay said “the only way The Nationals will be able to secure any political leverage for their supposed constituents in country NSW, will be as free agents regarding a Coalition.”

The current political uproar in Canberra over the proposed sale of Cubbie Station highlights the passive role of The Nationals in the Coalition and their inability to influence Liberal Party policies that affect regional Australia.
