OXLEY High School players showed they’re no slouches on the oztag field, taking out three of the four divisions at yesterday’s high schools gala day in Tamworth.
Now in about its sixth year, the gala day is run by junior oztag co-ordinator Katrina Davis as a lead-up to the start of the summer competition.
It was a big day, with about 60 games of oztag played.
Oxley, Peel, Tamworth High and Quirindi all entered teams totalling 28 all up across the four different age divisions – junior (7/8) boys and girls and senior (9/10) boys and girls.
Oxley won both the senior competitions, with the boys’ Gold defeating THS Snakeskins 5-1 in their final and the Taggers girls getting up 1-nil over THS Green.
There wasn’t a lot between them, so much so that despite playing in a losing side, hockey star Brittany King was named the best and fairest.
The boys’ best and fairest was Oxley cricket star Matt Everett.
THS Green took out the junior boys with a 4-2 win over Peel, while in the junior girls Oxley Babes were too good for Quirindi, running out 5-nil victors.
Oxley’s Ashleigh Brown was adjudged the best and fairest in that final and THS’s Braden Jerrard the boys’ best and fairest.
In the junior boys, numbers were such that they were split into pools but in the other divisions, everyone played each other once with the top two teams playing in the final.
“There were some close games,” Davis said.
“The finals places were based on for and against in some divisions.”
Registration afternoons for the next competition will be held next Wednesday and the following Wednesday from 4-6pm at the Plain St fields.
