Two weeks ago the Bears, current Group 4 premiers and Clayton Cup holders, lost their first game since the 2013 grand final when beaten 30-28 by West Lions at Jack Woolaston Oval.
The Bears’ 2005 premiership winning side also celebrated their 10-year reunion that weekend and sat through the Bears’ loss.
That hurt the Bears so much that captain-coach Zac Russ couldn’t talk to the media.
Tomorrow Lachlan Cameron should beware the hurting North Bear.
Today the Lions hope to surf off that shock win by upsetting the Gunnedah Bulldogs on a weekend where Gunnedah honours Australian Kangaroo and club legend John Donnelly by painting the John Donnelly Stand (at Kitchener Park) black and white after last night’s John Donnelly Memorial Ball.
Former Australian Test skipper and Western Suburbs teammate of Donnelly, Tom Raudonikus, was the special guest last night.
The Bulldogs will wear a black and white Wests Magpies strip in honour of Donnelly for tonight’s first grade clash against West Lions at Kitchener Park.
Group 4 Second Division also continues today with five games including the top of the table clash between Kootingal Roosters and Werris Creek Magpies (see page 118).
Group 21 also has three games (see Page 115) while Group 19 has revised its draw following Tingha’s decision to pull out.
Ashford will host reigning premiers Moree Boomerangs at Ashford Sportsground today, with Armidale heading to Glen Innes, Warialda away to Guyra and Moree Boars hosting Inverell Hawks.
