TAMWORTH Cup winner Tableaux is a possible non-starter in Sunday’s $25,000 Sky Gold Pryde’s EasiFeed Gunnedah Cup after copping a huge 5kg rise.
The Todd Howlett-trained gelding carried 54kg to win the recent $80,000 Tamworth Cup (1400m) but yesterday he received 59kg for the Mother’s Day feature at Riverside.
The 5kg impost wasn’t what his Cessnock trainer Todd Howlett wanted to hear when contacted by The Leader yesterday afternoon.
“I don’t think he’ll be going,” was Howlett’s disappointed response.
“I don’t think he can run a strong mile anyway, but the extra 5kg does make it hard.
“He did well with 54 to win the Tamworth Cup.”
He said his other option is to head to Sydney, but even mid-week races have been extra hard to win of late because of the wet weather on the eastern seaboard.
“I can’t say he won’t go to Gunnedah completely,” Howlett added.
“I’ll have to talk to the owner (Roger Hertel) first.”
Tableaux is the winner of five races from 33 starts and has now won his Coonamble owners $157,910 in prize money.
