The toy library has received a grant of $12,000 from the NSW Department of Ageing Disability and Homecare, under its Brighter Access program.
The money is aimed at boosting the organisation’s stocks of toys and learning resources for young children with special needs, and on this it’s seeking some advice.
Tamworth Toy Library president Fiona Downey said the toys they planned to acquire would be solely for children with disabilities, and would be lent on a needs-basis.
She said while the Denne St-based library was “bursting at the seams”, the opportunity to provide these special toys would be a great boost for parents and families of these children.
“We’ll be seeking advice from parents, occupational therapists and paediatricians on what sort of toys would be desired, and we welcome input from parents and families from right around the region,” Mrs Downey said.
Those wishing to make a suggestion can contact the toy library on its Facebook site, Tamworth Toy Library, or by writing to PO Box 1507, Tamworth, 2340.
The library offers family, casual (ideal for grandparents), Family Day Care and community organisation memberships on a school term or yearly basis and remains open during school holidays, except the Christmas break.
Opening hours are from 9.30am to 12.30pm on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, and the library accepts donations of good-quality toys that can be wiped clean between uses.
