He finished with four winners for the day and enjoyed a running treble at one stage with On Interest winning the John Jordan Memorial Final, Kingsbrae George the K9 Couriers Dubbo Stakes and then Porky Teller the Mikeloren Patisserie Tamworth Cup.
On Interest’s win was especially sweet for Northfield, being run in honour of Jordan.
The two had a long association and Northfield had commented after he won his heat last week it would be nice to win one of the Jordan races.
He got his wish on Saturday with the black dog powering to a two-and-a-half length win.
“It was very nice to have John Jordan’s wife (Trish) here,” he said.
Owner Michael O’Reilly also made the six-hour trip from Casino.
Oxygen Tank and Phina were the best away but On Interest exploded down the straight to hit the front by the first turn.
And that was where he stayed.
“He didn’t run as good a time as last week but he had to do it a bit harder,” Northfield said.
“Last week he went straight to the front.
“This week he came out ordinary and had to work his way around them.”
Little Asteroid (John Lawson) ran home for second with Oxygen Tank (Peter Midson) holding on for third.
Two races earlier, Kingsbrae Buddy powered to a six-and-a-quarter length win in the Harold Jordan Cannonball Best 8.
“Buddy really surprised,” Northfield said.
It was his first look at the track but that wasn’t so much the surprise, it was the run.
“He ran last on Tuesday at Lismore,” Northfield said.
“He came out four behind and stayed there.”
“He’s a very moody dog.”
But he does run well on grass, as he showed on Saturday.
“He went to the front and away he went,” he said.
The training operation is a team one with wife Toni also handling the training.
She was back home on Saturday “looking after the pups”.
It was a very good day for them with their other runner Kingsbrae Looney second in the classicbet.com.au Best 8 Stakes.
