Gunnedah United have won all three of their matches so far while OVA, who had the first-round bye, have won both their games to lie second on the table.
While Gunnedah United beat Namoi United 3-1 at Wee Waa on Saturday, OVA go to Narabri this Saturday to play Namoi United at Hogan Oval in Narrabri.
The OVA Mushies are coming off a 4-1 local derby win over Tamworth FC.
While it was a three-goal buffer, Tamworth FC coach Daryl Smith thought his side had much of the game.
“We were dominating the game early,” he said.
“But like everything at the moment, we just haven’t been having any luck.
“We were creating plenty of chances but couldn’t score.
“Then they get a penalty and go one up.”
Zac Kam almost equalised but had his point-blank range shot saved and then Tim Smith barrelled a drive from outside the box just over the cross bar.
“Then we lost Tim (eye injury).
“We created plenty and dominated for periods but OVA took their chances and we didn’t.”
Steve Marshall was one of the FC best along with goalscorer Kurt Barrow.
Smith also moved Zac Kam “up front”, the defender also impressing with a strong effort in a new position.
“I was looking for somone strong up front,” Smith said.
“He’s normally a fullback but played well.”
OVA coach Tim Coates reckoned his Mushies produced a fine team effort.
Leading the way was club stalwart Adam Watson.
“He was outstanding,” Coates said.
Watson also scored the second of the four OVA goals, with Brendon Fergie, Lachlan Browne and Luke Purcell on the scoresheet.
In other PL games, East Armidale and North Armidale played a 3-all draw and Joeys FC continued their unbeaten run with a 5-1 home win against Demon Knights.
Joeys have a bye this weekend while Demon Knights try to end their winless run against North Armidale.
South Armidale and East Armidale also play another local derby in their Northern Conference clash at Armidale Sportsground while Gunnedah United host North Companions at Wolesely Park and Moree travel to Tamworth’s Johnson Field to play Tamworth FC.
