Veteran cricketers have a final round of matches to play between Southern, Western and Northern teams.
Two weeks ago the three regions played off in Tamworth over three days, with the Western team – made up of Tamworth, Quirindi and Gunnedah players – winning both their games.
However Tamworth Veterans secretary David Head said “everything is on hold at the moment”.
“We’re waiting on a weather check.
“That’s the problem. They copped a caning down there last week and it’s supposed to be coming back this weekend.
“We’ll wait and see what the forecast is before they make a decision.”
Head said Western teams were ready to play tomorrow and Saturday if they get the go-ahead.
“Ronnie Farrell has done a great job getting two teams together for the second Over 70s Mini Carnival,” he said.
Head said there was room for a couple more players for a team which “won” the first Mini Carnival in Tamworth.
“At this stage we’re looking at getting a regular Over 70s competition going and hope to have it running in conjunction with the State Veterans Carnival in Tamworth in October.
“We have nine regions competing in two divisions at Tamworth with 13 teams so far.”
The fact an England Over 70s team is touring Australia later this year means two Tests will be played and it is hoped some of the local Over 70s might stand a chance of making the Aussie team through the State and National Over 70 Carnivals.
Tomorrow’s team (v Southern): Doug Crowell, Eric Walters, Col Barton, Peter Boyd, Mick Watkins, Ron Farrell, John Southam, Duncan Coleman, Peter Virgen and Steve Beaton.
Saturday’s team (v Northern): Peter Boyd, Ron Farrell, Mick Watkins, Graeme England, John Southam, Duncan Coleman, Denis Moran, Peter Virgen, Steve Beaton and Mike Morgan.
