James Bindley made no attempt for bail during a brief appearance in the dock of Armidale Local Court on Thursday afternoon following his arrest at his home in Armidale.
Just before 6pm on Wednesday, ambulance paramedics rushed to Niagara St, backed by police, after reports of a man being stabbed inside a house.
On arrival, officers found a 21-year-old man with a stab wound to his abdomen.
“Police believe a fraternal argument developed and turned physical,” New England acting crime manager Stuart Gray told The Leader.
“This is an indication domestic violence affects a whole range of people across the board.”
Acting Inspector Gray confirmed the victim had been rushed to Armidale hospital in a serious but stable condition.
Late yesterday, his condition improved, and he remains in a stable condition in hospital receiving treatment.
A crime scene was established at the home and the serious nature of the incident prompted Armidale detectives to take charge of the investigation.
Following inquiries, Bindley was arrested in Niagara St several hours after the alleged incident at the home.
He was taken to Armidale Police Station and questioned before he was charged with one count of wounding a person with intent to cause grievous bodily harm in a domestic context – a charge which carries a maximum penalty of up to 25 years in prison if convicted.
Bindley did not apply for bail in Armidale Local Court and it was formally refused by Magistrate Karen Stafford.
A brief of evidence into the case has been ordered before it returns to court in June.
