And tomorrow’s clash at Jack Woolaston Oval could be just the appetiser for fans looking for good, competitive games, especially on Anzac Day.
One person who might just provide some fireworks is West Lions’ Kyle “Yum Yum” Cochrane.
Cochrane has returned to the Lions this year after he starred in a premiership win with them when he was a blockbusting teenage winger.
West coach Phil Beaton said Cochrane had matured as a player but still possesses all that raw power he produced as a teenage tornado.
He’s hoping he will unleash at Jack Woolaston Oval and give fans some try-scoring thrills in what could be an Anzac Day battle to savour.
Cochrane might not have played in Tamworth for a while but North Tamworth captain-coach Zac Russ certainly knows plenty about him.
“We played together in the Northern Division (now Greater Northern) Under 18 side,” Russ recalled.
“He was unreal, a real X factor and just a real force.”
The Bears will have an X factor of their own as well for the match that kicks off around 1.30pm.
Last year’s winning coach, Brad McManus, has organised a reunion of the 2005 premiership-winning Bears for this weekend.
“Spitter has organised a 10-year reunion for that side,” Russ said.
“It was the first premiership North had won for some 25 years.
“They’ll all be at the game Saturday and then afterwards at the Oxley Bowling Club.”
The Oxley Bowling Club has become the new Bears’ den.
Russ is hoping the Bears will be full strength with the return of young backrower Dylan Manicaros from a hamstring injury although his younger brother, Corey, will be unavailable because of Greater Western CHS Trials in Coonabarabran today.
Gunnedah and Oxley Diggers complete the G4 First Division round with their clash at Kitchener Park on Sunday while the Group 4 Second Division is split, with two games tonight in Tamworth and three more tomorrow.
Kootingal Roosters shifted their game against Bendemeer to Ken Chillingworth Oval (home of the Pirates Rugby Club)) tonight to avoid clashing with annual Anzac Day ceremonies at Kootingal tomorrow, publicity officer Jessica Smith said.
“The Ladies League Tag begins at 6pm followed by the men’s game at 7pm,” she said.
“Both these clubs enjoy support not only from their own towns but from within Tamworth itself and it is hoped supporters will come to the game and cheer on their respective teams.
“A supporters’ bus has been organised to leave Kootingal Hotel on Friday evening.”
While the Roosters tackle the Mountain Men, reigning G4 Second Division premiers Dungowan Cowboys play unbeaten Werris Creek Magpies at Jack Woolaston Oval this evening (7.30pm kickoff).
Both teams are unbeaten with two wins apiece.
In other G4 Second Division games tomorrow, Boggabri hosts Manilla (Jubilee Oval, Boggabri), Quirindi is at home to Barraba (Quirindi Sportsground) and Uralla and Walcha stage a local tablelands derby at Woodville Oval, Uralla.
