Down 4-3, Waratahs scored twice in the last 10 minutes to get up 5-4 in their first grade women’s clash.
“It was a game that fluctuated,” Waratahs coach Graeme McKenzie said.
There was never more than a goal in it, with one side or the other holding the advantage.
“It was a very pleasing win,” McKenzie said.
“They played particularly well.”
He thought the midfield particularly did a good job.
“Our midfield was very good and we did take our chances,” he said.
“Brittany King, the two Rekunows – Tahlia and Katrina – Abigail (Doolan), Jess Thomas and Pip Ash were all very good.”
Ash, Thomas and Katrina Rekunow all got on the scoresheet with Ash and Thomas bagging doubles.
For McKenzie that was one of the most pleasing aspects – that they put away a few goals.
They have got a bit of work to do though in terms of getting their defence organised.
Danielle Arnell was Olympians’ chief scorer with two in what was on the whole a mixed goal-scoring performance.
“The goals we scored we probably shouldn’t have scored – they were either freaky or lucky,” coach Andrew Farmilo said.
“Some of the ones we should have put in the back of the net we didn’t.”
But it was defence that was their biggest issue.
“We got a bit lost in defence again,” he said.
“We did a lot of ball watching and they got in behind us.
“We probably weren’t as aggressive as we could have been. We hung back rather than stepped up.”
They were without keeper Libby Grills too, and missed her, he said.
Having no subs didn’t help either.
Farmilo said Emily Chaffey was really good for them.
She worked really hard. Dana Constable and Claudia Nielsen were also strong.
Neilsen had a high work-rate.
