Liverpool Plains Shire Council mayor Andrew Hope said he feared the situation would get “totally out of hand” for many farming families.
He said state MPs Kevin Anderson and Michael Johnsen and federal Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce must “loudly advocate” for more assistance.
Cr Hope said the full impact of the persistent dry weather became apparent while he was travelling the shire to consult with residents on local government reform.
“Everyone is feeling the impact, but there are some pockets that are really devastated, verging on (a) dust bowl,” he said.
“Apart from the financial woes for those affected, I’m deeply concerned about the health issues arising.
“Many farmers are facing another season without income.
“Some have been in drought more often than not over a number of years, which is more than anyone can reasonably expect a small business to withstand.
“There is a further flow-on, with a major impact on local businesses and on workers, who in some instances may have little choice but to leave town to support themselves.”
