Before the driver could get out of the car police will allege a 39-year-old man opened the driver's side door and punching him on the chin.
The driver was taken to St Vincent's Hospital as a result of the blow, where he received three stitches for the wound on his face.
Police will also allege the attacker demanded the driver to hand over his license and to remove himself from the vehicle.
Following inquiries by King Cross Local Area Command, police located the stolen vehicle in Paddington, abandoned and badly damaged.
Just over two hours after the incident, police arrested a man at a unit block on Brougham Street in Woolloomooloo.
