Workies on fire for finals

KIWIS put an exclamation point on their Tamworth men’s competition minor premiership while Services Workies enjoyed a goal feast in final-round action on Sunday.

Workies demolished South United 13-1 in an impressive warm-up for the finals after Kiwis had defeated Tudor West 3-1 earlier in the day.

Kiwis’ next game will be the grand final, with Workies and Tudors to fight it out next week for the right to face them in the decider.

Workies’ win also secured them the club championship.

It came down to the final game  with only a point separating the three clubs in contention.

Workies made their intentions clear early, opening up a 6-nil lead by half-time.

By 15 minutes into the second half they’d hit double figures.

“We knew Souths were weakened today but it was nice to put some goals away early in the first half,” Workies coach Simon Massey said.

“We asserted our dominance early.”

Ryan Martin and Isaac Farmilo both bagged four goals each while Andrew Farmilo popped in three.

It was a welcome result after four successive losses leading in and had some fluency about it.

“It was smooth and we used the movement of the ball to score goals rather than individual players,” Massey said.

He said Dan Dewit in the outside halves was their best.

Earlier, Kiwis had consolidated top spot with a two-goal win over Tudors.

“Today was all about finishing on a good note leading into the grand final,” co-coach Andrew Davy said.

They did that.

“The first half was very good  – we pinged the ball about and moved Tudors around,” Davy said.

“The space opened up and we were able to convert.”

The ball movement through the midfield and around the back in defence was particularly pleasing.

They were a lot more urgent and made the simple pass.

Their discipline was also pretty good.

The second half they still created enough opportunities but they were a bit disrupted with a couple of injuries.

Sam Constance slotted a double for them and Mitch Burrows the extras while Matt Newell got Tudors’ goal. It was really only consolation though with Kiwis ahead 3-nil at the time.

Davy said Cameron Thornton was very creative in the first half, while Josh Worpel was very strong in defence and Ben Hanlan and Lindsay Burrows played well in the midfield.
