A lease on the 6m-high sculpture Stargazer III, which is on display in the forecourt of the gallery and library building in Peel St, will expire soon.
The Walcha-based artist is offering the piece for $37,500, exclusive of GST, after knocking off $2500 the council has already paid for its lease.
Councillors decided against purchasing the piece last year and instead resolved to call for expressions of interest for a public work of art to sit in the forecourt.
However, this course of action was delayed pending a review of the council’s public art policy, which has yet to be completed.
The Tamworth Regional Arts and Cultural Advisory Committee supports the purchase of the piece.
“TRACAC ... recommends strongly to council that it reconsiders the purchase of this public art work for its permanent public art collection, given its value,” the committee said.
