ELEVEN veteran bowlers received special badges on a hot day where women lawn bowlers took part in the annual West Tamworth Sports and Bowling Club Veterans Day.
Around 70 veteran lawn bowlers took part in the annual event that dates back more than half a century.
“It started in 1960,” WTS&BC’s Bob Hennessey said yesterday.
“We’ve been running for 55 years. And you know this could be the first year we’ve had women players. That’s great to see they are involved too.”
The vets day has dwindled a little in numbers in recent years as teh numbers fall away.
“We used to get three full greens back in ‘80s and ‘90s,” he said.
“But 70 is a good number.”
WTS&BC presdent Ron Gill said a number of clubs were represented yesterday with players from Quirindi, Werris Creek, Nundle, Willow Tree, Oxley, Tamworth City and South Tamworth joining the large West tamworth turnout.
CNDBA president Bob Key was also on hand with local MP, Kevin Anderson, to present badges to vets (over 65) and super vets (over 70).
Vets badges were awarded to Don Kent (West Tamworth), Ray Brown (Werris Creek), Faye Jesnnison (Oxley), Sandy Jones (Tam City) and Lila McDonald (WT) with Super Vets badges going to Des Keech (WT), Ken Young (WT), Col Choyce (WT), KKen Walsh (WT), MAx Inman (Nundle) and Warren McDonald (WT).
Bob Key thanked all for attending, especially Kevin Anderson, who had ensured teh State Government provided $700 in sponsorship money after initially refusing the CNDBA’s submission.
Ron Gill then presented Anderson with a bold, blue West Tamworth shirt.
“We hope it’s not like the bottle of wine,” he said in reference to the recent downfall of former premier Barry O’Farrell and his neglect to note a valuable donation of a bottle win.
It brought a good laugh from the gathered vets before they retired to teh green after a traditional corn beef, white sauce and veges meal that has graced the vets day for many a year.
Tasted good too.
Sandy Jones (Tamworth City), Ron Walters (West) and Col Choyce (West) won the day from the trio of Rob Barnett (West), Keith Anderson South) and Paul D’Elboux (West). Lila McDonald (West), Kevin Inman (Nundle) and Keith Moore (Werris Creek) were third.
