The man sustained non-serious injuries when he ran his black Toyota Camry into the side of the hospital building and three parked cars at the intersection of Westbourne and Herbert streets in St Leonards.
Police said the man had lost control of the car.
He was admitted into the hospital and treated for minor injuries. The hospital said he is in a stable condition.
No one else was injured.
The building and the three parked cars were damaged, police said.
"The accident occurred at our research building, the Kolling building. The damage is minimal and the area is opened to traffic and people," a hospital spokeswoman said.
Fire and Rescue NSW also attended the site of the accident to assess the damage to the building wall.
