About 8am yesterday, detectives, backed by the New England Target Action Group and uniformed officers stormed a Butler St home in the hunt for those behind a raft of break-and-enters across town since the start of February.
A 32-year-old Kempsey man was arrested at the scene and was taken to Armidale Police Station, where he was expected to be charged last night by detectives.
Two dozen items including laptop computers, mobile phones and electronic tablets were seized as part of the police investigation.
“The result [yesterday] was after information received that resulted in the execution of a search warrant,” New England crime manager Detective Inspector Ann Joy told The Leader.
“We are still making a number of inquiries in relation to the items of property we seized.
“We continue to investigate the break-and-enters that occurred last month and into early March with a view to identifying any persons we believe responsible.”
The arrest is the latest in the crackdown by New England police following dozens of burglaries. But police are warning the community not to be complacent as thieves focus their attention on easy targets.
“This arrest is a breakthrough but it is by no means a suggestion things will abate,” Detective Inspector Joy said.
“There has still been a fairly high instance of people leaving windows and doors unlocked, which is still increasing opportunities for those who are committing these crimes.
“We’ve had significant results from information provided by members of the community in reporting suspicious behaviour and we encourage them to come forward with any other information they may have in relation to the offences that have been committed.”
