With regular Reds flyhalf Quade Cooper missing from Genia's side after a collarbone injury, the halfback has taken on a more prominent role.

The 27-year-old has never shirked responsibility and said he was happy to tackle that bigger job while Cooper recovered.

Queensland has played four fly halves in five matches this season with Duncan Paia'aua, James O'Connor, Karmichael Hunt and Nick Frisby all spending time as playmaker.

Injuries have plagued the Reds across the park and their backline depth has been especially tested in the opening three matches of the Super Rugby season.

Genia has been the constant as number nine and has shown some glimpses of the form that earned him 58 Wallabies caps.

"You try to take on a little bit more responsibility because you don't have the usual guy outside you with the experience that Quade has," he said.

"I think I enjoy that side of the game anyway.

"You take on a little bit more leadership and responsibility and it gives you a chance to influence the game a little bit more as well."

Becoming a father and taking a longer off-season break after an injury-marred 2014 have helped Genia return to the season with a fresh mind - something that has clearly translated into his matches.

"I'm just enjoying my footy and just trying to play as positively and as well as I can," he said.

"The toughest thing [last year] was just stop start.

"You get going and you get a bit of momentum and then you stop with injury and then it's hard to find yourself back in the mix fighting for selection.

"It just feels good that you're starting off the year fit and in a positive frame of mind and l'm looking to make the most of it."

Genia will have a chance to push his Wallabies credentials against national coach MIchael Cheika and incumbent halfback Nick Phipps on Saturday night.

Ironically it's some of the advice that Cheika gave Genia that has contributed to his provincial form boost.

"He just sat down and gave me a plan moving forward as to what he wanted from me," he said.

"He wanted me to get strong again, he thought that was a big area of my game that kind of dropped off a little bit as far as work in the gym.

"I've been doing a bit of work in the gym and I feel strong again. Maybe that's something that's helped me as far as my game as well.

Reds coach Richard Graham said Genia's improved strength and his longer break had contributed to his early burst of form.

"I think he's come back in a really good frame of mind, he's bouncing around the place at the moment," he said.

"Probably he's the strongest he's been for a while now having had a break and he's done a fair bit of lower body weights and that's giving him a lot of confidence as well."

Graham said injured trio Samu Kerevi, James Horwill and Ben Tapuai would all be fit for selection against the Waratahs on Saturday.
