The Australian Workers Union has adopted domestic violence as a workplace issue and will for the first time include a domestic violence leave clause in its model agreement.

National secretary, Scott McDine, said the AWU has been traditionally male-dominated, but wanted to "evolve".
"That means genuinely listening to women, understanding the entailments and protections that will enable them to have fulfilling and safe working lives," he said.
"If we want women to feel comfortable leaving violent relationships than we need to ensure they feel their employment is secure.
"Women who experience violence in the home will typically need to take time off to reorganise their affairs or to consult with doctors and lawyers. They need flexibility and security to do that."
Mr McDine said his union was supporting a call by the ACTU for extra domestic violence leave for victims to move house, seek legal advice, attend court appearances and other appointments.
"For far too long the unique perspectives and requirements of women in the workplace have taken a back seat," Mr McDine said.
The AWU is expected to pass a resolution at its biennial national conference on the Gold Coast on Wednesday, to include a domestic violence leave clause in the union's model agreement.
