THEY were running, jumping and leaping to the best of their abilities at the Tamworth Athletics Complex yesterday as hundreds of the region’s primary school athletes took to the track and the field for the regional carnival.
Just shy of 700 students participated in the carnival across a range of events and in age divisions from 8yrs to 13yrs.
They were vying for spots on the North West team to compete at the State Carnival at Homebush on October 17-18.
The first three placegetters in each event qualified to go on to the next level.
Among those competing was Kootingal Public’s Ella Heeney.
Heeney was backing up from running in the National All Schools Cross-Country carnival in Adelaide on the weekend, where she won gold as part of the 12yrs girls’ NSW relay team.
She also picked up silver in the teams event after placing 13th in her individual event.
