Claude Harvey was walking his mower through the streets of Tamworth yesterday in a bid to raise funds for Bravehearts’ education program, Ditto’s Keep Safe Adventure, to be brought to schools.
The altruistic 69-year-old said he was inspired to take action after two little girls he knew – aged only three and four –were abused by their adolescent next-door neighbour.
The mowing man said it was difficult being far apart from his wife, children and grandchildren on his many missions, but it was the thought of keeping children safe from harm that kept him putting one foot in front of the other.
Mr Harvey said he had been doing regular walks since 2000, when he was raising money to combat youth homelessness.
He estimates his fundraising efforts have swelled from a meagre 35 cents to almost $1 million. He has raised $41,000 so far on this latest venture. Mr Harvey has been driving to towns and pushing his mower along the city streets since starting in Tweed Heads on January 13. He will finish in Newcastle on March 23.
