Larkham believes Australian rugby has enough talent in its ranks to be successful on the international stage without needing to recruit from other sports.

But Inglis is being hotly pursued by European rugby clubs and there have been calls for the ARU to express interest in arguably rugby league's greatest asset, despite being on contract with the South Sydney Rabbitohs until the end of 2017.

Larkham has no doubt Inglis could be a rugby star if he decided to make a career change in the coming years.

But the World Cup-winning flyhalf believed there's enough talent in Australian rugby without needing to target players from other codes.

"From an Australian rugby point of view I'd love Australian rugby [union] players playing for the Wallabies," Larkham said.

"Sonny Bill Williams has made the transition superbly, Israel Folau is another example and Australian rugby has benefited [from Folau].

"I've certainly watched Greg Inglis play [NRL] and I think he could make the switch no doubt. But my preference is to look at guys who are in the game a long time ... I think there is enough talent in Australian rugby for the Wallabies to be successful."

Queensland Rugby Union chief executive Jim Carmichael said on Wednesday that the ARU should investigate the prospect of signing Inglis as his manager fields calls from rich French clubs.

Larkham played with cross-code converts Lote Tuqiri, Mat Rogers and Wendell Sailor in the Wallabies' 2003 World Cup campaign.

Former NRL stars Folau and Karmichael Hunt loom as the new breed of rugby league converts, while Sam Burgess (England) and Williams (New Zealand) have already made the switch.

Super Rugby clubs would not be able to match the rich contracts of overseas offers for Inglis, but the ARU could be willing to chip in if they view the Rabbitohs fullback as a key piece to Wallabies success.

The Brumbies face off against Williams when they play the Waikato Chiefs in New Plymouth on Friday.

Williams is just two games into his rugby comeback after a two-year stint with the Sydney Roosters, which included a premiership-winning season in 2013.

The 29-year-old will take on Wallabies World Cup hopeful Christian Lealiifano in a battle of the inside centres.

"My mindset is that once you start measuring yourself against people, you're going about it the wrong way," Lealiifano said of the positional battle.

"I've got to get my game right and do the right things for the side. You do the work you need to study [your opponent], but it's a back line thing and sometimes I don't even get to tackle my opposite number."

Williams set up two tries in the Chiefs' round-one win against the Auckland Blues last weekend.

The Brumbies back line fired in its opening game of the season, scoring six tries in a 44-point demolition of the Queensland Reds.

The win also gave Lealiifano a chance to get his goal-kicking mojo back, landing seven of his nine attempts after averaging just 50 per cent last year following ankle surgery.

Lealiifano feels rejuvenated after taking a break from kicking at the end of last year and is playing pain free.

"Last week was a good starting point for us, we'll move forward from there," Lealiifano said.

"It felt good kicking last week, but it's still a constant work in progress. It's good to get a bit of reward for the work that has gone into it. I was disappointed with the ones I missed.

"The ankle is all fixed now and it's just a bit mental as well, getting the feeling back. It was a bit of relief to step away from it a bit last year, but I was still working in the background."
