The residents of 18 properties along Meadows Ln, off the highway about 10km south of the city, have long been calling for a traffic solution for what they’ve described as a potential deathtrap.
They’ve argued for a turning lane for vehicles turning right off the highway, and have cited countless near-misses, and even accidents, saying only luck had prevented some from proving fatal.
Yesterday they finally received some good news, with member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson saying Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) had inspected the site and agreed it needed fixing.
“That includes building a slip lane, so vehicles travelling south can move safety past the vehicle waiting to turn right,” he said.
Mr Anderson said he would continue to push for funding for the project and residents were hopeful of work commencing this year.
Grazier and stud owner Rodger Grant, who has lived on Meadows Ln for eight years, said he was now sure work would be carried out to make the intersection safer and that it was a good result, after so many years of campaigning.
Just last year, he said, friends with a horse float who live on the lane were involved in an accident, and, just a few months ago, another neighbour lost a side mirror off her vehicle while waiting to turn right.
“It’s a really dangerous situation ... and it’s great that after so long, someone had finally got proactive,” Mr Grant said.
