Australian actor Sullivan Stapleton has been cast in a new US pilot, Blindspot. The project, for the US network NBC, stars Stapleton as an FBI agent tasked with investigating the case of a young woman (Jaimie Alexander) who is found in the city with her memory wiped. According to the US trade publication Deadline, Stapleton and Alexander are "the most heavily pursued actor and actress" this pilot season. Blindspot is written by Martin Gero and directed by Mark Pellington.
Lyons lawyers up for pilot
Revolution star David Lyons has been cast in a new US pilot, Game of Silence, from CSI producer Carol Mendelsohn. Lyons' Australian credits include SeaPatrol. Since relocating to the US he has starred in ER and The Cape. Game of Silence stars Lyons as a successful lawyer whose perfect world is brought to the brink of ruin when secrets from his past catch up with him. The series is based on a Turkish format.
Comedy specials in Netflix deal
Netflix has inked a deal with Beyond Distribution for a package of content for its Australian streaming service, expected to launch in March. The deal covers a suite of comedy specials featuring Carl Barron, Kitty Flanagan, Jimeoin and the Umbilical Brothers. It also includes the series Mythbusters, Lightning Point and H2O: Just Add Water. Netflix is launching with a library of original content, including the US series Bloodline, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Marvel's Daredevil.
Alexy signs up for family drama
Australian actress Gillian Alexy has been cast in a new US pilot, Outsiders. The series, for the WGN channel, is a family drama set in the hills of Appalachia. Alexy, whose credits include The Americans and Royal Pains, will play G'Winn Farrell in the series, a woman who is described as a "survivor". The series is created by Peter Mattei and will be produced for Sony Television by Peter Tolan and Paul Giamatti.
'Outcast" to screen on cable
The cable channel FX has secured the Australian rights to Outcast, the new US drama from The Walking Dead's Robert Kirkman. The series features Almost Famous star Patrick Fugit as a young man plagued by demonic possession who turns to a priest, Reverend Anderson (Phillip Glenister) for help. The series airs in the US on the HBO-owned channel Cinemax. The series also stars Gabriel Bateman. No airdate has been set.
Horror to get TV spin
A television spin-off to the hit Australian horror film series Wolf Creek is in development at the paid TV streaming service Stan. The project is being developed by writer and director Greg Mclean and the writer/producers of Underbelly, Greg Haddrick, Peter Gawler and Felicity Packard. It would be set after the events of the film Wolf Creek 2. Stan is also developing a political drama, Enemies of the State, based on the life of former High Court Justice Lionel Murphy.
