While the Wendy Blaker-coached girls’ side had a 144-run loss to Hunter at Armidale Sportsground, the Kel Walls-coached boys beat Sydney West by seven wickets at Bathurst’s Morse Park 2.
North West restricted Sydney West to 9-114 in their 50 overs and then lost just the three wickets in reaching their target in the 42nd over.
Inverell pair Tom Scoble and Sage Cook were the stars.
Scoble claimed four wickets in another impressive spell from the CNZ Bradman Cup representative, finishing with 4-32 from his 10 overs.
Narrabri’s Dylan Segundo also bowled tightly, claiming 1-11 from his seven overs while spinners Jack Richards (2-23) and Ryan Meppem (1-16) also bowled good 10-over spells.
North West then batted steadily with Cook, batting at number three, scoring a patient and unbeaten 46.
Narrabri’s Meppem also batted soundly, registering 22 and Farrer opener Tom Fitzgerald (22) also batted solidly.
“It was a good solid start for us,” North West manager Kel Walls said.
“All in all it was quite a good performance.”
They play Riverina at George Park 2 today.
In Armidale, Hunter were too strong for the young North West side, making 5-209 from their 50 overs and then routing the host region for just 65.
Kirstin Smith (81) topscored for Hunter while Trudi Peterson (40) and Maitlin Brown (35) also impressed.
Sarah Lennon (1-32 off 10) and Khiarni Cornish (1-18 off 7) were the pick of the NW bowlers while Wee Waa’s Aleisha Middleton (1-42 off 8) also had success.
Blaker thought her side started well before falling apart.
“We were doing really well,” she said.
“We were 3-60 and going along nicely but then lost our way and were all out 65.”
Khiarni Cornish (22) topscored for NW while Zoe Fleming (12) and Dahlia Glennie (12) both produced good knocks.
“We have two 17-year-olds, two 16s, a 15 and the rest are 14 and under, so it’s a very young side,” Blaker said.
“It’s all a big learning experience for them.”
North West plays two T20 games today, tackling Sydney East at TAS backfield and North Coast at Harris Park in the afternoon.
