But you're also likely to be accompanied by plenty of people on the train.

In its first week running, the new rail line is already luring thousands of commuters from other stops across south-west Sydney who are attracted to two new well-lit stations, spacious car parks and relatively traffic-free streets.

"I get here and I like it so much better," said Ellie Pini, a Camden resident who commutes to Town Hall.

Ms Pini used to drive to Campbelltown, where competition is fierce for parking spots, and where the roads clog well before 7am.

"Here the trains aren't packed, the stations aren't packed, it's less stress."

The $1.8 billion South West Rail Link is that rare thing in Sydney - a piece of transport infrastructure built before the streets around it start to groan with housing development.

But there has been plenty of development in other suburbs in the south west. And on its first week, trains passing through the two new stations of Leppington and Edmondson Park were already well loaded as they made it off the new line into the interchange at Glenfield.

"I grew up in Leppington for a while so I've sort of spent 20 years waiting for it," said Damien Selakovic, who used to drive to Holsworthy for his train into town.

Mr Selakovic said the South West Rail Link services would be full in no time, particularly when they started running more frequently.

"A lot of people from Camden, Narellan, Harrington Park, Oran Park, they'll all come here," he said.

According to the Transport Minister, Gladys Berejiklian, about 10,000 trips were made to and from Leppington and Edmondson Park stations this week.

"Patronage is in line with what I expected at this stage," the minister said. "Obviously the number of people using the South West Rail Link will increase over the coming weeks, months and years."

The state government, which opened the line last Sunday, enjoys the boast that all tracks on the line were laid after the Coalition came to power in 2011.

But construction on other works on the project - massive flyovers at Glenfield - did start under the previous Labor government in 2010, even if Labor had earlier delayed the project on multiple occasions.

At Leppington, however, they're just glad for an easier trip to work.

"It's been great, it shaves off about 15 minutes either way," said Justin Taylor from Harrington Park, who used to drive to Campbelltown or Holsworthy stations for his commute.

Another commuter, Angelo Kolaitis, said: "I guess the only problem is that it's not regular, it's only every half an hour."
