The Celebrities have been stuck here for eleven days now and are feeling pretty stinky and hungry. So now's the time to break up their cozy little sense of camaradrie by throwing someone new into the mix. Well, more accurately, two someones new.

But that's to come. First we have the regular issue of how to get 90 minutes of entertaining television when most of the Celebrity day appears to consist of everyone lying around doing nothing.

Said lying around is topped and tailed at the commercial breaks by our hosts, and… honestly, why is Dr Chris Brown there again? Julia Morris could carry this whole thing on her own without blinking. Actually, strike that: she already is.

Anyway, there are three things happening today. Firstly the intruders are arriving, and secondly they'll be doing today's thoroughly unpleasant challenge in order to win food for the camp.

The third thing is that it's AFL star Barry Hall's birthday, and there are celebrations afoot. Not only does he get a football, but he also gets Cheezels, ice cream cake and booze. Oh, and Joel Creasey doing an impersonation of Marilyn Monroe singing . "The last time I got sung to like that was my thirtieth, and it was a stripper," Hall reveals. So y'know, that's something.

Speaking of Creasey, he's moved on quickly. After Olympian Leisel Jones became the first to be eliminated the other day, you have no doubt been worried sick that he'd be all lonely without their compelling improv comedy double act, but fret not: he has a new BFF in the form of TV's Chrissie Swan. To mark this new union, we enjoy several minutes watching them discussing their respective smells – now that's compelling viewing.

Then we meet the intruders: The Bachelor 2013 Tim Robards and winner Anna Heinrich. They're still together. See, everyone? Love is real.

The challenge they must complete involves a tank full of snakes – 30 of them, to be specific – crawling and coiling around eleven marked stars. Each one represents a meal. And the irksomely lovey-dovey pair know that the only way they're going to win over their soon-to-be veldtmates is to arrive with a full compliment of food.

The snakes are not venomous, but… well, they're still snakes. It also provides the hosts with several opportunities to try out various gags comparing the snakes to the female contestants on The Bachelor, none of which land without an audible thud.

Anyway, Robards is supposedly terrified of snakes but both he and Heinrich get to work on the task at hand, which is relatively straightforward – reach in, avoid snake, grab star, place in slot, repeat – until star No.7, which is placed beneath a bunch of snakes that need to be coaxed away using body heat. And they're all more tricky and increasingly snaked up from there, but they still get all eleven without a single much-deserved bite.

Meanwhile back at the camp Swan's newly attuned sense of smell alerts her to the approach of the intruders' perfume ("I've turned into a bloody wildebeest"). Hall decides that the best welcome is to burn their beds for fuel and thus force the newcomers to sleep on the ground. Maureen McCormick has a bash at kissing Creasey, and Merv Hughes responds as he does to most other things: by farting a lot.

The newcomers arrive to a subdued welcome, although the fact that they've come with a big food win makes a good first impression for a couple that seem guaranteed to annoy everyone with their hand-holding, goo-goo eyes and constant use of pet names. Just in case you forgot: love is real, people. Love is irritatingly real.

Hi-Five alumnus Lauren Brant's especially not pleased about this development. For a start, the newcomers are a touchy-feely couple while the main topic of conversation between everyone else is about how achingly much they miss their respective other halves.

Also, she's concerned that they know something about the show and can potentially outflank her using their strategic nous – which assumes that the intruders are a lot more shrewd than the evidence would suggest.

However, maybe Brant can leapfrog ahead since she and model Laura Dundovic get voted in for the Tuesday Tucker Trial, in which they will get to enjoy Blood Sweat and Cheers: fancy-looking drinks filled with disgusting bits of animals.

But that's another episode. For now, we have love. Also: hunger, reptiles, and incessant farting. Truly, tonight's show had something for everyone.
