The Charlie Northfield-trained dog beat odds-on favourite Rose Sannette (Kevin Johnson) to win the first heat in 30.05secs on Saturday, Armidale Greyhound Racing Club president Garry Carson said.
“He was only one hundredth of a second outside He’s Some Boy’s track record,” Carson said.
“He ran 30.04secs and Porkyteller ran 30.05secs.
“Rose Sannette also ran a good race.
“They had a fair bit on the rest, who finished 10 lengths away.
“On the times, you’d think the Cup will be between these two.
“Rose Sannette was slow out of the boxes today so it might depend where they draw.”
It might also depend on how Porkyteller pulls up after running at Lismore tomorrow night.
“He was having his third run in a week here and goes around at Lismore on Tuesday night too,” Carson said.
Mulwee Jest won the second heat in 30.40secs for Murrurundi’s Ranald Dawes, winning by a length and three quarters from Lloyd Metcalfe junior’s Quatro Raider and Little Surgeon (Hayden Munn).
Armidale put through 10 races on Saturday.
“It was a good day, good crowd too,” Carson said.
“We also had heats of the McDonald’s 1-4 Wins.
“The Queensland dog, Spring Eliza (John Bradley), won the first heat in 21.25secs and then Robert Bray’s dog, Firing On, won the second in 21.25secs too.
“John Lawson’s dog, Little Asteroid, won the third heat in 21.14secs and Arthur Wright (Watson’s Creek) won the fourth heat with Spring Dale in 21.55secs.
“It was good to have two local winners, Robert Bray and Arthur Wright, too while John Lawson and Barry Hobson also finished with doubles.
“Barry had two starters for two winners, running the two quickest times of the day.
“His maidener, Little Jesinda, won well (20.92secs) and Chanson (20.89secs) also broke the the 21secs, winning the North Hill Vet Non Grade which was a very good run in a smart field.”
