Wife Robyn was in on the secret, convincing her husband to be at the Old Bell Tower yesterday where he was presented with a Premier’s Community Service Award by Tamworth MP Kevin Anderson.
It’s one of the few Mr Anderson has presented since taking office, Mr Cathcart recognised for his tireless efforts with numerous organisations and events over a number of decades. Mr Cathcart, who spent much of his career in the aviation sector, and still maintains those links through his
position on the board of directors of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service and as chairman of
the company’s New England - North West Regional Advisory Committee.
He’s also involved with two Tamworth hospital committees, church committees and helps young people get their driver’s licence through a Joblink Plus program.
A councillor with the former Parry Shire Council, Mr Cathcart also served as manager of the Tamworth Business Chamber for seven years.
In a resume too long to cover in full, he has also been a consultant on aviation and regional development issues for the state and federal governments and, locally, put in a lot of volunteer hours in his Moore Creek community.
He said he was shocked by yesterday’s presentation, attended by many friends and colleagues, but grateful to be acknowledged.
“It’s nice to know someone appreciates what I’ve done, but there’s a lot of people deserving of an award like this,” Mr Cathcart said.
“I’ve just been pleased to give back to a community that’s given so much to me.”
