About 5.30am on Sunday, a 32-year-old man entered the newsagency on Gosport St and asked to purchase an item.
While the shopkeeper responded to his request, the man allegedly went behind the counter, drew a knife and demanded money.
The shopkeeper handed over a sum of cash and the man fled.
Police were called to the scene and began an investigation, which led them to arrest a man in a Warialda St home.
He was taken to Moree Police Station, charged with armed robbery and was refused bail.
The shopkeeper was not injured during the incident.
