Katrina Higgins, a mother of three who works in administration at Tamworth Shoppingworld, claimed the tiara-adorned Akubra at Friday night’s ceremony.
She clutched at her heart in shock at the moment of truth when the winner of the quest – sponsored by The Northern Daily Leader – was announced.
“I definitely didn’t expect to win Queen,” Ms Higgins said.
“I first asked the judges if they were sure – I was shocked.
“I was very emotional. I had a rough year last year and I was trying to turn a negative into a positive.
“I want to teach my children you can do whatever you want to, you just need to put the hard work in.
“I’m honoured by how many people actually supported and trusted in me to be an ambassador for Tamworth.”
She said she was looking forward to representing her home of Tamworth during the country music festival in Gore, our sister city in New Zealand.
Fellow quest contestant Madeleine Patterson said she was shocked to be named this year’s Princess and was thrilled to be promoting “our beautiful city”.
“I think everyone should have the opportunity to go in it. Even if you’re shy, it’s a great confidence booster,” Miss Patterson said.
Jamee-Leigh Hartwig was named Miss Congeniality in the quest.
During the festival, the 14 contestants delivered newspapers to campers, promoted local businesses, handed out advice to festivalgoers and took a turn at line dancing and attended major concerts.
Judges said they found it difficult to pick a winner, but Ms Higgins’ confidence and infectious personality had shone through.
