He usually invites all his friends on stage, but this year he’s decided to show what Tamworth means to him with those artists who helped him or who he looked up to when he was starting out.
“This typifies what Tamworth means to me,” Cassar-Daley said.
“I wanted to put something together that was quirkier than my normal friends show.”
Cassar-Daley said when he first arrived in Tamworth in 1981, he went straight to the old Capitol Theatre and saw Brian Young play.
“I saw a proper variety show,” he said.
“There was always something about seeing different people on stage that I wanted to recreate. That affected me more than I realised at the time. Every time I looked up, there was someone new on stage and it just moved me.”
This will be brought to life at TRECC, with Cassar-Daley inviting legends including Roger Knox and Rex Dallas on stage to perform their songs.
“I wanted to paint a bit of a picture of what it was like when I arrived in town,” he said.
“I spent three days on tour putting the show together. I love catching up with these people – if the artists in the show realised how excited I am to be playing with them, they’d take a restraining order out on me. There are some serious pickers in this line-up.
“It has been the biggest thrill, talking to them all on the phone.”
Cassar-Daley said all those artists he’d grown up with had culminated in this show.
Roger Knox said he was pleased to be on stage with Cassar-Daley.
“I want to meet some of his fans, make new fans and be with Troy, then I can go brag to people about it,” he said with a laugh.
“I remember Troy as a little fella – he got my autograph, and he had a friend with him who got my autograph, too. He was Keith Urban.”
Rex Dallas said he looked forward to working with Cassar-Daley again. “I remember when Troy started in Tamworth and he was getting going in the business,” he said.
“I have admired him ever since he got there, where he should be. I’m looking forward to getting up there and enjoying his show live.”
As well as reliving his history, Cassar-Daley said he would perform four songs from the new album, Freedom Ride, with the new single, Take A Walk In My Country, released this week.
Cassar-Daley’s album is out on March 13.
