With the International Cricket Council reportedly encouraging match referees and umpires to crack down on sledging to avoid ugly incidents during next month's World Cup, and in the aftermath of some fiery exchanges during the Border-Gavaskar Test series, player behaviour will be in the spotlight in the triangular series.

David Warner made the trip to Melbourne and, with no spare batsman in the squad as Michael Clarke and Mitch Marsh recover from hamstring injuries, he looks likely to play at the MCG despite admitting to hamstring tightness after batting Australia to an easy victory over England at the SCG on Friday night.

"It's a little bit sore," Warner said after making 127 from 115 balls. "Just taking off there and turning ... I'll get some ice on it and get out there on Sunday."

Faulkner took 3-47 and made sure of a bonus point when he hit Stuart Broad over mid-wicket to score the winning runs in the 40th over. While his six not out paled in comparison with some of his more brutal lower-order efforts, it was still an important cameo given Australia had just lost a clump of wickets.

"It was literally the 35-over mark when we decided to have a crack at [the bonus point]. Probably in the end we shouldn't have got it, but 'Hadds' came out and whacked a couple of boundaries.

"It's my job with bat on ball at the end of an innings. There's going to be times when things don't go to plan but I didn't have to contribute much with the bat last night. I just had to get the last couple of runs, the rest of the boys did the job and it was set up by David."

Faulkner did not play in the Test series but the 24-year-old all-rounder is not one to back down from a confrontation.

"As long as it's controlled. There's always things said out on the pitch, but it's all in a good spirit. It's to upset the opposition players whether they're batting or bowling. But that's the game and it's always been there," he said.

"We play our best cricket as long as we're not going over the boundaries, we play very good aggressive, fair cricket and that's the way Australia have always played and it will continue that way."

Virat Kohli was involved in several flashpoints during the Tests and was reported by the ICC along with Warner, Shikhar Dhawan, Ishant Sharma and Mitchell Starc.

Fairfax Media revealed in November that world cricket bosses intended to take a tougher stance on bad behaviour, and last week an unnamed ICC official told The Times that a crackdown would be in force during the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

"We do not want some repulsive confrontation at the World Cup. It would be terrible publicity for the game," the official said. "Umpires and match referees clearly need to feel they will be fully supported if they decide that something is inappropriate, especially related to language or threatening behaviour. They are rightly being encouraged to clamp down."

English commentator Jonathan Agnew has apologised for a "misjudgment" in the way he presented his view that Australia and India missed a chance to improve their behaviour after the death of Phillip Hughes. His  suggestion that the Australians had failed to honour Hughes by maintaining their hard-nosed approach drew an angry response.

"Obviously I am very disappointed at what has happened, that was never my intention," Agnew told ABC Radio on Saturday. "My original comments about this were for a non-sporting audience. I spoke in a different way than I would have done than if I had been speaking to cricket people.

"[The comments] probably were misjudged and I am really sorry, I made a misjudgment in the manner in which I presented what I was saying.

But Agnew did not apologise for his long-held view that sledging has gone too far. "There was a real opportunity that seems to have been missed for the game to take a long, hard look at itself," he said.

"If you look back to when that awful tragedy with Phillip Hughes happened, there was a debate about all sorts of things, about how the game might change as a result – helmets, bouncers, crowd reaction, even commentators. One of those was the players' behaviour, their respect for each other.

"A lot of people outside Australia were looking at that Test series and wondering, given the history between those two teams, if it might be played differently.
