Joe Hillard, a member of the Labor Party for 40 years and president of the local branch, takes his place alongside sitting Nationals member Kevin Anderson and high-profile independent Peter Draper as the third Tamworth nomination for the March 28 poll.
Mr Hillard, 61, said he would fight to ensure the seat was not taken for granted by the Nationals.
“This region needs someone who will fight for better local hospitals, schools, TAFE, roads and for our country passenger rail,” Mr Hillard said.
“As a father and now grandfather, I understand how important our kids’ education is for our community’s future, from early childhood right through to adulthood.
“I see firsthand the damage the Liberal-National government has caused with their cuts to our education system, especially the TAFE sector.
“I also understand how important an accessible and affordable healthcare system is for local families.”
The seat has never been held by a Labor member and candidate Paul Hobbs garnered just 4.7 per cent of the primary vote at the 2011 election.
Mr Hillard retired as the district manager of the Gunnedah probation and parole office in 2013 and is now heavily involved in local charities.
Mr Anderson holds the seat with a margin of 12.5 per cent on a two-candidate preferred basis.
