Acting Inspector Darren Brand said the search would resume at 8am on Sunday.
He said police divers would not be in attendance for the remainder of the search.
The Volunteer Rescue Association and SES are still assigned to the operation.
2pm: Police are still searching for an Iranian man feared drowned in the Murrumbidgee River at Oura.
Emergency services including the SES, VRA and police divers continued their search on Saturday and had scoured the water since 8.30am.
Divers have been concentrating in waters downstream from Oura beach.
Wagga police duty officer acting Inspector Darren Brand said the four police divers were having difficulty locating the man.
Acting Inspector Brand said it is estimated the river is flowing at seven knots.
"Unfortunately, if they haven't located anyone by this afternoon, it's anticipated they (police divers) will return to Sydney," he said.
The search has expanded more than three kilometres downstream from where the 25-year-old, known only as Ali, was swimming on Christmas Day.
The dangerous currents swept the man away and he soon disappeared after crying out for help.
Two other men entered the water to try to save the man but were defeated by the dangerous conditions.
Police divers were using sonar to locate the man on Saturday afternoon.
Acting Inspector Brand said the Iranian embassy had been notified of the search, with the embassy notifying the man's next of kin.
Police said the 25-year-old has no family in Wagga and friends have told The Daily Advertiser he is employed at the Teys Bomen abattoir.
