There was no room to move in Tamworth’s Bicentennial Park as families, locals and carol-lovers packed in for a long list of Christmas favourites on Saturday night.
“‘Excellent’ is the short answer,” St Peter’s Anglican steering committee member Paul Crosby said.
“It’s probably the biggest crowd we’ve ever had. It was full all the way, right back to the end of the park and the hill as well.”
Cool and calm conditions helped Jocelyn Bignell, Jake Nauta and the long list of musicians in the brass band, pipe band and combined churches choir to belt out childhood songs.
The carols could be heard across the Tamworth CBD, but it was the thousands of candles and glow sticks that helped to light up the park.
“It was just amazing,” Mr Crosby said.
“There was no wind, so the sound wasn’t blown away. It was great.”
A bucket walk for the Bush Church Aid Society’s drought counselling service helped to raise money, and the Lions Club also fundraised with a barbecue to feed the hungry masses.
St Peter’s Church said the annual event – which has been broadcasting carols for decades in Tamworth – would continue, but Saturday night’s success wouldn’t be possible without the sponsors, including The Northern Daily Leader, Woodleys Motors, Radio 2TM, Calrossy Anglican School, Radio Shack and Pulse Kitchens.
