Watering your garden can be less worrisome to those that have an evaporative air cooler by locating the hose exiting the unit on the roof, connecting it to a length of hose and running it into a 240lt bin or an open tank.

Then, drop in a submersible pump and connect to a hose, or bucket the water out, to use it.
I also run washing water into a drum and use a pump, but it has to be a submersible grey water pump. I use fine netting across top of drum to prevent lint, etc, going through as it clogs the sprinkler, if you use one.
By doing this I use no town water at all on my garden, trees or lawn during the summer months.
However, I don’t think too much grey water (from some detergents) is suitable for native shrubs and trees.
Submersible pumps can be purchased for about $69, cheaper than losing lots of plants.
A big tip though ... make sure there is never anything restricting the water overflow from your cooler or you could damage the cooler.
