The 23-year-old protege has been on the cusp of the Australian speed battery for almost five years after wearing the light blue of NSW at the record age of 17.
Some poorly timed injuries has seen Hazlewood carry the drinks a few times and miss out on others, although yesterday morning he wasn’t missing out on much but still getting plenty of carry.
Given the further honour of opening the bowling with Mitchell Johnson, the former Old Boy took the ball like an old hand and had the Indian openers playing at air on several occasions in his first spell.
A magical debut saw Hazlewood deliver a quick double to expose the Indian middle order early in the day.
Opener Cheteshwar Pujara got a beautiful ball that reared up, caught an edge and sailed into Haddin’s gloves with the batsman on 18.
It was a dubious decision on replay but the ball deserved a wicket, and with no review system the opener was replaced by Virat Kohli.
Despite scoring a remarkable ton in the first game, Kohli was no match for Hazlewood, who had him cutting at one he shouldn’t have and edging behind to Haddin for his second for only 19.
The afternoon belonged to India as the Aussies struggled to keep the pace up in the hot and humid conditions.
Muralia Vijay hit a scintillating 144 before falling to Lyon late in the day to leave India on top at 4-311.
Proud father Trevor was in the crowd with the rest of the family and said there was some tears of joy and relief shed as he put the Baggy Green on his head.
“We have been on tenter hooks for a while,” Trevor said.
“I was just so pleased when he bowled that first over and then he got his first wicket.
“15 overs, five maidens and two wickets against India.
“Got to be happy with that on debut!”
Trevor said that now the debut and nerves were out of the way he can only improve even more.
“He has achieved all he has set out to achieve,” Trevor said.
“He was the backbone at times out there today.”
