I fully support the sensible trimming of street trees to keep them clear of power lines, as this is just common sense.
However, I strongly object to what appears to be a haphazard method which leaves trees with an unbalanced look and gives an unnatural look to the streetscape.
If you want a tragic example of this, travel along Carthage St, from Brisbane St to Hill St, and observe the bizarre shapes of the poor old silky oaks on the left-hand side.
Perhaps have a look at the trees in front of the North Tamworth Bowling Club in Bligh St.
Years ago when we had our own local electricity organisation (PCCC) they seemed to be able to trim the trees right across and achieve a balanced look.
I presume that in this day and age the tree lopping is done by a contractor for whom time means money and only the basic trimming is done which leaves the oddly shaped trees around town.
If you want to see a sad sight take a look at the barren streetscape in front of Tamworth City Bowling Club in Napier St where all 10 silky oaks have been removed.
As reported in The Leader on December 4, council’s adamant response was “the ageing silky oaks needed to be chopped down as they presented an unacceptable risk to public safety”.
If we follow this reasoning I suppose all the silky oaks in front of Tamworth Public School should be removed, as well as all the others in Napier St which are of the same vintage.
Please, whoever is responsible – trim our street trees in a sensible, balanced way so that our streetscapes remain attractive and pleasing to the eye.
