The scenario of Victoria hosting the final and not being able to play it at the MCG on March 21 because of a clash with World Cup fixtures has become a reality after the Bushrangers moved to top of the shield table on Friday.

A patient Victoria claimed the nine West Australian wickets needed on the final day at the WACA Ground on Friday to claim the 117-run victory.

The Warriors equalled their first innings of 287 in the second, with captain Adam Voges providing the resistance with an unbeaten 139.

When he and Ash Agar shared a 156-run partnership in 34 overs, the home side even looked capable of chasing down the 405 required for an unlikely victory.

But Agar (62) was caught behind by wicketkeeper Matthew Wade off the bowling of Dan Christian three minutes before tea and the Warriors were 6-267 and still requiring 138 runs.

Christian then claimed the wickets of Nathan Rimmington (1) and Jason Behrendorff (0) soon after the break to regain momentum for the Bushrangers.

If the Australian selectors were picking the Test side on form alone, the 35-year-old Voges would have to be seriously looked at.

His century on Friday followed on from his 101 in the first innings and was his third three-figure score in four shield innings. He has amassed 509 runs at an average of 101.8 this season.

He already has form at the top level, having played 31 ODIs and averaging 45.78 runs and 46.33 (with a strike rate of 121.9) in seven International T20s.

Earlier, WA struggled to 5-116 at lunch, still 289 runs from their target.

Having started the day on 1-26, Tom Beaton was out in the third over of the day for 12, lbw to Chris Tremain, having added just two runs to his overnight score.

Scott Boland then removed the dangerous pair of Michael Klinger (32) and Shaun Marsh (11) in the space of eight overs.

When Sam Whiteman was rapped on the pads in front of the stumps by Glenn Maxwell for just six runs, the chances of WA lasting the day were seemingly over.

Whiteman has scored a total of just 94 runs in six visits to the middle this shield season, at an average of just 15.7.

And the WA tail has failed to wag in Shield games this season.

Before Agar's innings on Friday, only once has a WA batsman not in the top five spots scored a half-century, which was Nathan Coulter-Nile in the first game of the season when he scored 64 against Tasmania.

Agar's effort in this game was the third time he has made it past 20.

But besides him, only Rimmington – 24 against Queensland in the second round of fixtures –has got a start.

And that didn't change on Friday.
