The Tigers beat actual defending premiers Dungowan in the final to win the flag in 2007 but were then transferred to Group 19 by Country Rugby League.
Last season the Tigers made a somewhat triumphant return to the top grade but are more than happy to leave the northern group for Group 4 for one reason alone, travel.
“Travel was the killer,” Press said.
“Two trips to Moree and a trip to Goondiwindi was just too much and cost too much.”
“Now the two hours to Boggabri is the furthest, with Walcha, Bendemeer, and Kootingal just down the road.”
Carl is the last Press left after first grade had five of them on the field at one stage last year.
As the side played three grades every week with barely enough players for one, it was the Press boys who held the club together.
Star back Jordan is off to South Newcastle, along with cousin Sam.
The two boys played three grades most weekends, and took the premiership in the U18s.
Greg Press is off to Forster to work, leaving Carl, who claims he has retired from playing and stepped down from president and coach.
Steven Vanry has taken the presidency, although the club is yet to name its coach.
“We really enjoyed our time in Group 4 and are looking forward to being part of it again,” Press said.
The new side will contain two U18s in Lochlan Elks and front-rower Bryce Johnson.
On the other end of the scale the move has also brought a lot of players out of retirement for another run around.
There is just one problem – they are all forwards, and mostly front-rowers.
Scott Swain and Ben Jones have announced they will both play, with whispers around that Anthony Carberry might also pull the boots back on.
“At the moment we have 14 forwards and three backs with seven front-rowers,” Press said.
“If we keep the ball in hand we should be very good in attack.”
The side will miss playmaker Freddy Campbell who is heading back to Newcastle.
If Narwan gets up and running in Group 19, another couple of last year’s Tigers are expected to return there as well.
“Everyone is looking forward to the move back and getting back into the battles we used to have with the likes of Walcha, Kooty and especially Dungowan,” Press said.
“There will be two defending premiers next year.”
