The Hockeyroos star took to social media to post a video of the disallowed referral by the Australian side. "#interesting The decision referral system may need reviewing," she posted.

Nelson's post follows social media support from Australian hockey star Jamie Dwyer as he stuck up for his female counterparts after the contentious goal in the penalty shootout.

The Kookaburras veteran took to Twitter instantly after the decision to show his dismay at the goal being awarded. "That was not a goal," Dwyer tweeted. "The ball didn't go across the line."

When later questioned on Twitter, he was adamant that the goal should not have counted. "The whole ball has to cross the line," he said. "That's the rule."

The Argentines went on to win the penalty shootout 3-1. The first shot of the penalty shootout was a blast from Argentinian stalwart Luciana Aymar that hit both posts before coming back out the front of the goal. Hockeyroos captain Casey Eastham immediately approached the referee and asked for a referral to the video box. The decision came back to stay with the on-field decision.

Goalkeeping was of the highest quality in the Champions Trophy final, with both teams ending regulation time at one goal apiece. Argentina's goalkeeper Belen Succi made three successful one-on-one saves after several key saves in the second half to hold the Hockeyroos out.

It took a Kathryn Slattery miscued her shot off an awkward bouncing ball in the 35th minute to break the defences of Succi but Eastham still believes that Australia has the best one-on-one keepers.

"Succi had an incredible game," Eastham said. "She does make a lot of saves and is a key member of the Argentinian team but, to be honest, I think I would back our keepers over her in a one-on-one.

"We did study her approach for the one-on-ones ahead of the job today but I do think Australia has the best one-on-one keepers in the world."

It didn't take long for the hosts to level the scores with Florencia Habif getting her stick on the ball to tip a fiery penalty corner shot past Ashlee Wells in goal.

The Champions Trophy gave Australia an opportunity to blood some young players into international competition before next year's Oceania Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

The match had extra significance for the Las Leonas side, with star player Luciana Aymar playing her final tournament match. Eastham said it was not a daunting prospect for the Hockeyroos.

"We're pretty good with sticking to what we have to do," she said. "Obviously the crowd got behind her and the Argentinian girls to make it difficult out there. She's been an exceptional player for a number of years and it will be a sad loss for the game.

"We're so close to that gold medal so we're just going to keep on fighting for it and working for it but we definitely think we've given ourselves the best chance. It's anyone's game come Rio. I'm really excited for Australian hockey," Eastham said.

"I guess this tournament for us was developing a bit of depth in our team, introducing some of the girls to international hockey at a major tournament. We did that. We achieved our goal of making the final.

"We definitely have a tough year ahead of us and it's a bit of a tricky one because it's the year leading into Olympics to do a lot of the groundwork and work on the tactics and structures and pick those up for the next six months prep into the Olympics."
