PRIMARY school students one day – recording stars the next.
It was all in a day’s work for 23 Timbumburi Public School students from years 5 and 6 who had their first experience in a recording studio last Friday at LBS, Tamworth.
Year 2 teacher Harley Walmsley said the students had studied composition this term, so the class wrote a song and, just to add that something different, they recorded it.
The students were actually from Mr McDonald’s class, but he and Harley had swapped classes for the past couple of terms.
“We were very fortunate that Peel High School allowed music teacher (and my husband) Anthony Walmsley and Year 12 graduate Matt Davis to come along and help us out,” Harley said.
“Anthony played guitar and Matt played drums. Shaza Leigh played bass and Lindsay Butler was at the control panel. Lindsay’s going to put some keyboards over the top for us later.”
It’s a whole-class effort, with 28 vocalists on the one song, and the youngsters are taking their stardom in their stride.
“It’s their first time in a studio and they’ve been in and out all day,” Harley said.
“They’ve been part of the whole process, working out which parts go where. They’ve really loved it.
“It’s given them a real sense of ownership. Instead of simply playing their class song on recorders, we went one better and actually recorded it. They all feel intensely proud of their efforts.”
